Tips for Staying Safe
If you are still in the relationship:
- Think of an escape route if you are confronted by your abuser.
- Think of a list of people and resources you can contact in an emergency.
- Keep a spare set of keys and extra clothing with a friend.
- Keep important papers in one place that you can easily access.
- Establish a code word with family and friends that will alert them if needed.
- Address safety issues with your child(ren).
- Go to a safe place.
- A safe person to talk to.
- Calling for help and its dangers.
- Stay aware of warning signs in your relationship.
- Try to save money without your abuser becoming aware.
If you are planning to leave the relationship:
- Remember important papers (birth certificates, immunization records, school records, insurance forms, cart titles, etc.).
- Check your emergency resources.
- Keep your keys and belongings in easy access.
- Rehearse your escape plan.
If you have left the relationship:
- Try not to stay alone.
- Screen your calls.
- Document all contacts with your abuser.
- Secure your home.
- Change locks if still in the home.
- Check batteries in smoke alarms.
- Be sure of outside lighting.
- Think of ways to alert yourself of intruders.
- Inform appropriate people at your workplace.
- Obtain a protection order.
- Alert neighbors and family that your mate should no longer be there.
- Code word.
- Check out your vehicle before entering it, and keep it locked.
- Be aware of your surroundings.
- Change routines
Remember to stay safe and prepared. Go over your safety plan regularly
